Coin Tavern Game Modes & Themes
Eight launch themes, difficulty unlocks, and how Endless fits after campaign clear.
Coin Tavern’s full Steam release advertises eight game modes (theme runs) plus Endless Mode after you clear the main campaign. Modes change stage flavour, exclusive coins, and difficulty ladders — they do not replace the core loop of flip → shop → pay debt. This guide helps you pick a first theme, understand unlock habits from Patch 1.0.04, and know when to leave modes for Endless.
Always verify mode names and stage counts in your client. Theme labels below are cross-checked against Steam achievement clusters and launch messaging; UI spelling can differ slightly by language pack.
Core Loop Stays the Same
Every mode still asks you to:
- Flip Field coins toward the stage debt target
- Manage Field vs Bag (auto-refill when Field drops under 20 — see Field and Bag)
- Spend tickets and hammers in the shop after a clear — Shop and Tickets
- Draft relics and optionally gems that rewrite run rules — Relics, Gems
Modes change which exclusive coins appear, how hard early debt feels, and which achievement tracks open. They do not invent a second combat system.
The Eight Launch Themes (Overview)
Use this as a menu map, not a spoiler dump of every exclusive coin:
| Theme (Steam / achievement clusters) | Who it suits | First habit |
|---|---|---|
| Casual Tavern | First clears, learning debt pacing | Finish First Win here before chasing hard themes |
| Custom Mode | Experimenting with Build Mode decks | Patch 1.0.07 fixed tiny coin icons in Build Mode UI |
| Circus | High-variance luck spikes | Budget cleanup coins before big show turns |
| Dark Dungeon | Riskier climbs, night-themed pressure | Keep Field legal targets for LookUp-style effects |
| Fairy Wonderland | Whimsical exclusive pools | Read new coin tooltips — fairy packs can change transform rules |
| Moving Castle | Machine / engineer fantasy | Pair with Machines merge habits |
| Ultimate Mode | Veterans seeking harder ladders | Unlock lower difficulties first; raise after a clear |
| Treasure Cove | Explorer / treasure fantasy | Economy relics matter when sails stretch long |
Demo-era notes already teased Circus and fairy-castle style modes before launch; full release folds those themes into the eight-mode roster with roughly 164 coins and 204 relics across the game.
Unlock and Difficulty Habits (Patch 1.0.04)
Patch 1.0.04 changed how new modes unlock:
- Unlock requirement moved from level 2 → level 1 for the affected new mode track
- After unlock, you may select any difficulty of that mode
- Difficulty 1 numerical requirements were slightly increased — casual clears are a bit tighter than day-one assumptions
Practical advice:
- Clear Casual Tavern (or your first unlocked theme) before grinding side themes for cosmetics or achievements
- Do not copy stage counts from a different theme’s YouTube run
- After unlocking a theme, try a low difficulty once to learn exclusive coins, then raise
- Confirm locked themes in the mode select UI — Steam achievements hint at progress, but the client is authoritative
Endless Mode Is Separate
Endless Mode is not one of the eight theme slots. It unlocks after you beat the main campaign. Endless adds long climbs, tavern-purchase fantasy (“buy the tavern” style goals), and endurance achievements. Patch 1.0.04 added animated prompts when purchasing taverns in Endless.
Full verification steps: Collection and Endless. Campaign route: First Win.
How to Choose Your Next Mode
Ask four questions at the mode select screen:
- Stage count — how long is this climb versus your available session?
- Exclusive coins — do you already own engines that need them, or are you learning?
- Difficulty modifiers — can you still hit debt if targets rise early?
- Unlock goal — clearing for Endless, hunting a theme achievement, or testing a Build Mode list?
If you only want one clean victory tonight, stay on Casual / low difficulty. If you are achievement hunting, read Achievements so you pick the theme that matches the trophy cluster.
Patch Notes That Touch Modes and Build Mode
- 1.0.04 — mode unlock level, any-difficulty selection, Endless tavern purchase prompts, difficulty 1 tuning
- 1.0.07 — Build Mode coin rendering size fixed (Custom Mode editors benefit)
- Timing patches 1.0.05–1.0.06 still apply inside every theme (Magic Mirror, Devotion Gem, Magician, Cloning Pod, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many game modes does Coin Tavern have?
Launch advertising lists eight theme modes, plus Endless Mode after you clear the main campaign. Confirm names in your client's mode select screen.
Is Endless one of the eight modes?
No. Endless unlocks after the main campaign and is tracked separately from the eight theme runs.
What did Patch 1.0.04 change about modes?
New-mode unlock moved from level 2 to level 1, unlocked modes allow any difficulty, and difficulty 1 requirements rose slightly.
Which mode should beginners play first?
Casual Tavern (or the lowest unlocked difficulty of your first theme). Finish a campaign clear before grinding side themes or Endless.
Does Custom Mode use Build Mode?
Custom Mode is the place players experiment with curated lists. Patch 1.0.07 fixed coins rendering too small in the Build Mode UI.
Where do I verify official mode names?
In the live Coin Tavern client and on Steam news. This wiki maps themes from launch messaging and achievement clusters without inventing exclusive coin lists.
