Coin Tavern Field Coins vs Bag Coins
How automatic Bag refills reshape every add, remove, transform, and destroy decision on the tavern board.
Most Coin Tavern advice talks about “the deck” as one pile. The client is more precise: Field Coins sit in play; Bag Coins wait off the board. When the field falls below 20 coins, Bag coins are added automatically. That single rule reframes shop adds, removals, transforms, and destroys as quality control for future refills, not just this round’s gold.
This guide is the systems page behind First Win and a companion to Deck Management. After Patch 1.0.05, transform cleanup also matters — Tanuki’s face value now resets correctly when a transformation ends. Patch 1.0.06 fixed Cloning Pod copies of Octopus incorrectly entering the Bag — verify Pod results land where the live tooltip says, not where launch-week clips showed.
Field: Where Triggers Need Targets
The field is where legal targets live. Jump, destroy, merge, spawn, and reflip lines fail when the coin they need is missing or crowded out. Before you fire a volatile Monster convert or a Machine merge, ask:
- Is the target on the field right now?
- Will this effect empty the field enough to pull Bag filler next?
- Am I about to destroy the only body that enables next flip’s payoff?
A strong field is readable. You should be able to point at each coin and name its job: starter, amplifier, cleanup, or cash-out. Unlabelled clutter is how Bag refills turn into noise.
Bag: The Future of Your Field
The Bag is not a graveyard — it is the refill queue. Because the game tops the field up from the Bag when count dips below 20, every coin you leave in the Bag is a coin that may walk back onto the board at the worst moment.
Sort Bag contents mentally into four buckets:
- Fuel — coins that enable engines (spawners, jump enablers, merge food)
- Starters — reliable first flips when a round opens
- Payoffs — convert or cash-out pieces you want to see often
- Filler — low-impact bodies that dilute average flip quality
Cutting filler from the Bag often raises stage-clear rates more than adding another rare payoff. Beginner Tips already pushes thin decks; Field/Bag logic explains why thinning works.
Auto-Refill Under 20
Treat the under-20 refill as a design constraint:
- Destroy-heavy lines can accidentally invite Bag junk mid-round if they empty the field too far
- Spawn-heavy Beast lines can stall when the field is already packed above the threshold and new tokens cannot land cleanly
- Shop adds that look free still occupy Bag slots that will return later
Before a destroy resolves, preview the next field state. Before adding another coin, decide whether it is fuel, starter, payoff, or filler. After a transformation, check the original coin’s next-round state — do not assume transformed values stick forever.
Transforms After Patch 1.0.05
Transform coins rewrite face values and roles for a window. Patch 1.0.05 fixed Tanuki so face value resets after the transformation ends. Practical habits:
- Note the pre-transform value if you plan a later cash-out
- Re-check tooltips when the transform expires mid-stage
- Avoid planning multi-stage lines on temporary transformed numbers
Patch Notes also covers Magic Mirror’s one-round duration and Devotion Gem’s earlier resolution — both interact with when field bodies are worth flipping.
Add, Remove, Transform, Destroy as One System
| Action | Field effect | Bag / refill effect |
|---|---|---|
| Add | More bodies now | Future refill includes the new coin |
| Remove | Fewer bodies now | That coin stops returning via Bag |
| Transform | Temporary role/value change | Watch reset behaviour after expiry |
| Destroy | Removes a body; may pay out | Can trigger under-20 Bag top-up |
Use Shop and Tickets when deciding whether a hammer upgrade on a high-frequency field coin beats adding a Bag filler. Use How to Combo when jump and reflip lines need specific field neighbours.
Faction Notes
- Humans — want stable field starters; Bag filler hurts them first
- Monsters — destroy and convert need crowded fields, then cleanup so refill quality stays high
- Beasts — spawn engines fight field caps; cleanup coins are Bag insurance
- Machines — merge ladders need controlled food on the field, not random Bag metals
Cross-faction bridges from Cross-Faction Builds often exist to fix field jobs one mono-faction pile lacks.
Practice Drills Between Runs
- After a failed stage, list which Bag coins refilled and whether they helped
- In the Deck Planner, tag each planned coin as fuel / starter / payoff / cut
- On the next run, refuse one add that has no named job
- After any transform, spend one second reading the post-expiry state

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the difference between Field and Bag in Coin Tavern?
Field coins are in play and can be flip targets. Bag coins sit off-board and automatically refill the field when it drops below 20 coins.
Why does destroying coins sometimes hurt my run?
Heavy destroys can pull low-quality Bag coins onto the field via the under-20 refill. Destroy payoffs still need a clean Bag behind them.
Should I fill the Bag with every shop coin?
No. Filler in the Bag lowers future refill quality. Prefer coins with a named job — fuel, starter, or payoff.
What did Patch 1.0.05 change for transforms?
Tanuki's face value now resets correctly after its transformation ends. Always re-check post-transform state in your client.
How does this relate to deck thinning?
Thinning removes Bag filler so automatic refills bring useful roles. See Deck Management for shop timing.
Where should beginners apply this first?
On the First Win campaign clear — keep the field readable and the Bag honest before optimising Endless climbs.
